DAKIN MAYERS AND JBWERE SPONSOR FIA CEO FORUM - APRIL 2013

Dakin Mayers - in conjunction with JBWere - sponsors the Fundraising Institute of Australia’s CEO forum. Exclusively for CEOs and Board Chairs of not-for-profit organisations, the forum discussions are targeted at a strategic level.

The guest speaker for the April Melbourne Forum was Kate Carnell AO, CEO and Deputy Chair of beyondblue, a national, independent, not-for-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety and related disorders in Australia. Kate shared her insights and perceptions on strategic fundraising including:

  • Challenges and expectations of a CEO around fundraising, from a Board Member’s perspective
  • Whether her perceptions, expectations and strategies of fundraising had changed since taking on the role of CEO
  • Any fundraising challenges that she did not foresee before moving into the role of CEO
  • Strategies to engage the Board, senior management and staff in fundraising

The speaker for our inaugural Sydney CEO Forum was Tim Costello AO. Tim leads one of Australia’s largest charitable organisations, World Vision Australia, which has an annual fundraising income of about $300M.

He shared his thoughts on strategic fundraising in the NFP sector and provided insight into challenges and successes. He spoke about the importance of seeing NFPs in a more positive light – we should call our organisations ‘For Purpose’ as an alternative to ‘For Profit’, as NFP has a negative connotation.

He also spoke about the changing nature of fundraising in the current economic environment, and the need for fundraising managers to connect strategically with CEOs and the Board.

Observing the Chatham House Rule, the events also included full question, answer and discussion sessions where participants actively engaged with the speakers and their peers on how not-for-profit organisations can grow fundraising revenue to achieve their mission.

The CEO Forums were very well attended, with almost 70 participants in Melbourne, and over 30 at the Sydney event.
